Indoor Farming

Is it possible to overcome the limitations of traditional farming of growing vegetables without sunlight and under controlled conditions? How safe and sustainable is it to push the boundaries of mother nature to grow food faster?

To address these concerns, some companies have turned to indoor farming to cultivate quality vegetables in a soil-based, pesticide free environment to ensure nutritious and high-quality production.  It is an emerging industry, and for Alfred Tham, Assistant General Manager of Panasonic’s Agriculture Business Division, pioneering Panasonic’s urban farming efforts have been challenging, yet fulfilling on many levels.

“Most people will associate Panasonic with household electrical appliances, but they are not aware that beyond manufacturing, we are also extending operations to contribute to Singapore’s self-sufficiency in food via a sustainable agriculture system,” said Alfred.

Under the traditional soil-based farming system, crops are subjected to many external conditions, such as pests and poor weather, but with urban farming, it ensures that plants are grown in optimal conditions – which translates to a stable and high-quality produce.

Alfred was neither trained or have any background in the agriculture industry.  However, he decided to rise up to the challenge when he was approached to take charge of setting up Singapore’s first licensed indoor vegetable farm.

It was not a smooth-sailing journey but he was determined to learn new skills that would allow him to progress in his career.

“It is important to have perseverance and a positive attitude as a lot of effort goes into the research to ensure that quality is not compromised. The role switch from manufacturing to agriculture sector was daunting, but I believed in the cause,” opined the mid-career professional.

Alfred’s pioneering spirit exhibits tenacity, and shows that lifelong learning is essential in our work and lives no matter where we are in our careers. His courage to explore unchartered territories and constant drive to stay relevant in the industry is commendable.

His hopes for the future?

“To bring this new technology to a higher level and upgrade my skills to ensure that I can contribute to the company and environment,” he shares.
