At Waterway Primary School, their newest members had the whole school to themselves, as part of MOE’s arrangements to help younger students ease into their new environment on the first school day.

The teachers could dedicate more support to helping the young ones settle in, and also work more closely with parents to start the year off on a positive note.

As the students were playing ice-breaker games and making new friends, parents were tasked to pen letters of encouragement to their child. Many parents wrote about how proud they were, and shared their hopes for their child for this primary school journey.

“We want our students to feel a sense of belonging to the school right from the first day, and having their parents present gives our students comfort and confidence,” says Mrs Shrlinda Lee, Year Head (Primary 1). “It signals that school is a safe and welcoming place for them to learn and grow. This will provide a strong foundation for them to build on for the next six years of their journey in primary school.”
