MOE Kindergarten (MK) offers a comprehensive and supportive environment tailored to meet the needs of young learners and their families. Whether it’s through the full-day care service, engaging projects or meaningful learning activities, MK ensures that children receive a balanced and holistic education.
1. Full-day Care Service is available at MK
Kindergarten Care (KCare) service is available for all MK children who require full-day care. Operated by an MOE-appointed service provider, KCare is available until 7 pm on weekdays, including school holidays, within MK premises. This is an excellent option for working parents needing extended childcare hours.
2. You can consider MK even before your child is ready for K1
MK partners with Early Years Centres (EYCs) run by selected Anchor Operators. If your child is aged between 2 months to 4 years, you can consider enrolling them in an EYC. Children in EYCs are guaranteed a place at a partner MK for K1 and K2, ensuring a seamless transition as they grow.
3. Children are given opportunities to take charge of their own learning at MK
Learning at MK is designed to be engaging and child-led. For instance, during the “Weeks of Wonder” (WoW) projects, children explore topics that interest them, and conduct research in English and their Mother Tongue Language (MTL). They learn to make sense of the world around them, solve problems and work together with their friends to find answers to their own questions.
4. There are no spelling tests at MK
MK teachers do not administer traditional spelling tests. Instead, they focus on teaching words in context to help children understand their meanings. Children practise spelling and writing through meaningful activities, such as writing thank-you cards to their parents, making learning practical and enjoyable.
5. Outdoor play is an integral part of the curriculum
Children enjoy 30 minutes of outdoor activities daily. This time outdoors is crucial for their physical, social-emotional, and mental well-being, providing a balanced approach to early childhood education.
6. ‘Homework’ is more fun at MK
MK does not assign worksheets as homework. Instead, it offers enjoyable, family-based activities to reinforce learning and strengthen parent-child bonds. For instance, a family activity might involve shopping for snacks with the Healthier Choice Symbol, promoting healthy eating habits, reading and numeracy skills.
7. One way to enhance learning? Go on field trips!
Field trips are an essential component of the MK curriculum, designed to enrich children’s learning experiences. The cost of these trips is covered by MOE, allowing MK children to enjoy educational excursions without additional financial burden on parents.
8. MK helps ensure a smooth transition to primary school
Each MK is located within a primary school, with a curriculum designed by MOE specialists experienced in both early childhood and primary education. The strategic location and well-thought-out curriculum facilitate a smooth transition for children moving on to Primary 1, ensuring they are well-prepared and confident.
