In Pictures: ASEAN Schools Games 2017 Opening Ceremony

It was an evening of exciting performances from our students, with the official opening of the 2017 edition of the ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The ASG brings together student athletes from 10 Southeast Asian countries, as the nations mark the 50th anniversary of the bloc.

Students from our schools came together and put up an exciting performance to welcome the ASEAN team, coaches and their families.

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller. The students don’t just learn what it takes to be a good performer; they also learn that it takes a village to pull off a successful show.

Ariadna, a Year 3 Theatre student from the School of the Arts, cheers on our student athletes with the song “Conqueror”. Besides marking the start of ASG, the opening ceremony celebrates students’ diverse talents.

Former national gymnast Lim Heem Wei takes to the stage with an impressive vault routine. “I hope to be able to inspire younger athletes to chase their dreams, even as they face setbacks,” she says.

The Singapore contingent is all smiles as they make their way in. “I’m pretty excited as it’s my first time taking part in the ASG,” says 16-year-old Cherlin Sia, who will be representing Singapore schools in pole vault.

Swimmer Jade Lim brings in the ASG torch with her father, former national footballer Lim Tong Hai. “My parents have been my biggest pillar of support,” says Jade.
